Teaching Philosophy

Dr. Gutiérrez’s teaching philosophy is shaped by over a decade of experience in diverse educational settings, ranging from community colleges to R1 research institutions. Through these experiences, she has come to understand that one of the most feminist approaches to undergraduate teaching is to recognize that is not about how much a professor knows, but about how much the student learns.

This perspective guides her in cultivating a classroom environment where students are supported and empowered to become agents of knowledge themselves. She believes students exist within a broader social context and have the potential to actively shape a more feminist and socially just world.

Moreover, Dr. Gutiérrez is committed to fostering a classroom that resists oppression and avoids reproducing systems of inequality. This includes recognizing and accommodating diverse learning styles, co-creating community guidelines with students, and designing an intersectional syllabus that affirms and reflects the full range of student identities.
